Goals Galore

It took a while but the GCW ladies goal scoring sprang into life on Saturday. The visitors were Kelburne who the women have beaten twice but in both cases it took late goals to seal 2-1 wins. This was not the case on Saturday. No Connie Hatfield, Emily Parsons or Eva Sheal due to illness and Abby Miller and Nicole Duffin were away. Returning to the squad were Shiona Littlejohn, Fay Bruce, Alana Willox and Becky Sinclair. There was one debutant in Jess Freeman.

I am not sure I can remember all the goals as it is such a rare event for things to fall into place for the GCW women in the circle. The first quarter was an indifferent performance from the women with some erratic passing. However they did score with Sara Duthie making the space and Alana Willox finishing the move off.

The second quarter was more like it with some stronger efficient passing and two goals (both from corners). The first found Ava Airnes on the right side of the goal after a rebound but she showed good composure to pick her spot rather than rush the shot. There was one more goal from Lisa Clyne also at a corner as she stepped in to rebound the ball past the Kelburne keeper.

The third quarter started strongly with a fourth goal from GCW when a ball into the circle was deflected and found Fay Bruce at the back post to net. At this point it all looked calm, however nothing is that normal with the ladies. Kelburne took advantage of some home slackness to get a goal back and then got a second as the home side suddenly seemed rattled.

The break between quarters was useful for the GCW side as it allowed them to regain momentum in the match. The final goal was a cutback along the baseline and Alana was on hand to finish just as if it were a training drill. A 5-2 home victory so a happy team, supporters and coach.

The girls 2s earlier in the day were leading 1-0 going into the fourth quarter against Aberdeen following a fine take out of teh air and finish from Jessie Cannell. The strength of experience in the Aberdeen side told in the final quarter however as they equalised and then finished by scoring two goals late on. A good performance by the seconds and probably a result that dd  not reflect the game but a good lesson for future matches to put the game away.
