The GCW Ladies were at home and back in Black this week. The return to black however did not mean a change in fortune. The visitors were St Andrews and a return to Aberdeen for Kirsten Watson.
The game started out as the previous week with GCW pressing and controlling the game but as the previous week the first insertion into the GCW circle brought about a goal for the visitors. Some poor tackling in the GCW half allowed the visitors to get into the circle and the forward then forced a good save from Alison Akiri but the second shot found its way home. GCW continued to press and Jen Smith nearly got the equaliser but the ball went just wide with no home stick to convert by deflection. This was to be a theme for the day.
In the second period some indecisiveness in getting the ball out from a GCW 16 allowed St Andrews into the circle for a second time and they converted that opportunity to now be leading 2-0 at the break.
GCW started the third period knowing they had most of the pressure and chances but were not finding their way home. The substitution of Ava Airnes, a late call up, looked like a glimmer of hope as she latched on to a through ball in the circle and calmly placed the ball beyond the St Andrews keeper. The comeback was on!
Well actually no, within 5 minutes a St Andrews corner was initially blocked but the ball returned to the top of the circle instead of wide and they took their chance to go 3-1 up. There were many “oohs” and “aahs” from the GCW support as chance after chance was missed from what seemed definite scoring opportunities. There was however to be no comeback and the visitors ran out 3-1 winners after a plucky defensive display and some poor finishing by GCW.
