16s Girls Just Lose Out

The girls U16 National League team travelled to Tranent on Sunday to take on Gullane in the latest of their games. A full squad of 16 travelled away from rainy Aberdeen to sunny Tranent.

The game was quite even with both sides struggling to pass cleanly and pressing high up the pitch. The first half ended 0-0 on a bouncy pitch with no team able to show the finishing touch and no corners conceded by either side. Definitely a stalemate.

The second half started but GCW began to show more punch in the final 25 yard area. A through ball found Milly Moyes in on goal with Ava Black off to her left but the keeper came out to smother and no GCW player could get on the end of the rebound. At the other end Alison Akiri was also called into action blocking a shot from the home side as they entered the circle. The breakthrough came from GCW however when a fine strong run from skipper Ava Airnes saw her play a ball into the circle for the advanced Olivia Fraser on the bounce and Olivia swept the ball home.

Two minutes later and a further GCW break as Olivia drove through the middle out pacing the whole Gullane defence. Just  as Olivia got to the point of shooting she lost balance and could not connect cleanly and the ball ran wide. It looked like a positive end to the period however Gullane drove into the circle on the right and what looked like a hopeful push managed to find a path through the defence to allow the home team to equalise.

The final quarter was to and fro until two minutes from the ned the home side won the ball in midfield drove into the circle and swept a bouncy ball home to win the game.

It was a competitive match and either side could have won it but the home side narrowly sneaked a 2-1 victory. Next up Grange in Aberdeen in March, hopefully at ASV.
